China 512 Earthquake Relief Fund
 

Dear Leaders and members of UCAPO Organzations:

A massive earthquake struck southwest China on Monday, May 12, 2008, killing 55,239 people (the number is still increasing by thousands), trapping about 900 students under the rubble of their school and thousands more are still missing, the death toll is still rising. Many have lost everything they owned. Lives and families have been ruined. These unfortunate people NEED your help to rebuild their lives. It is imperative for those of us fortunate enough not to be affected to contribute in anyway that we can. A small contribution goes a long way!

UCAPO Joined a coalition of Chinese-American Communities to organizing a fundraising drive to gather community support and strength in the Greater Washington D.C area for the earthquake victims. Please help in anyway you can. We believe you can help make a difference!

Every dollar generated will go towards the Earthquake victims via CHINESE Red Cross.

四川地震牵动侨心﹐华府社团连手救灾

 

5月12日﹐四川发生7．9级强烈地震﹗房屋坍塌、道路损毁、水电中断、人员伤亡惨重﹐数万灾民急需救助﹐他们缺水、缺粮、缺帐篷和生活用品﹐还有大批伤病员等待救治﹗

消息震惊世界﹐更牵动无数海外侨胞的心﹗大华府各社团领袖听到信息就互相联系﹐13日晚在第一时间举行了紧急会议。远隔重洋﹐我们怎样尽快支持灾区﹖﹗大家一致认为﹐应以最快的速度﹐最大的力量募集善款﹐为灾区尽我们的一份爱心和义务。华人关切中国地震、紧急救援的消息﹐竟还引来了CBS电视台的记者到会上采访。

希望中文学校理事长梁康之表示﹐学校已经决定将本期所有盈余全部捐赠灾区﹐而六个校区已分别开始行动﹐募款目标是五万美元﹔旅美科协也开始了网上募捐﹐并立刻为大华府侨团的集体行动开辟了网站﹔四川、福建、广东等同乡会﹐李氏公所、李癦溪房等传统侨团﹐也都已经开始募款。

到会侨领更立即带头行动﹐慷慨解囊。梁康之、刘平中、张丽清、林民跃、袁祝光各捐出1000元﹔龚锦、李叶青、王龙来、李美娟各捐出500元﹔宋志颖和Michail Shnary各捐出200元。四川同乡会认捐一万元﹐黄大为他所在的Faircrest Community认捐1600元﹐李氏公所和李癦溪房各认捐500元。大家决定第二天即刻将这首批善款电汇去中国红十字会。四川同乡会夏祥波代表家乡人民﹐对大家表示真诚的感谢﹐他还告诉大家﹐即将在维州举行的“中国历代精品展销”﹐主办单位已答应将30%的收入捐献给灾区。

经过讨论﹐会议决定各社团统一行动﹐广泛发动群众﹐开展一系列有组织的赈灾募款活动。希望中文学校各校区和美中实验学校每个周末都开放募捐场地﹐民众可随时去捐款﹔近期凡社团活动﹐都将组织人员到现场进行募捐﹔为得到更广泛的援助﹐还将筹备面对主流社会的演出、拍卖等较大活动。
