1.IFCE led a new environment/energy technological delegation to visit China from Oct. 26-Nov. 6. The delegation visited Shanghai, Suzhou, Suqian, Langfang and Beijing. In these cities, delegates met senior officials, business leaders and professionals to discuss possible cooperation and projects. In Shanghai and Beijing, two conferences were held. The delegates discussed with sr. officials from the Development and Reforming Commission and the Ministry of Science and Tech on energy policy, environmental tech transfer and other relevant topics. 2.The 4th NGO Forum on International Environmental Cooperation in China, jointly organized byThe International Fund for China’s Environment, Renmin University of China, and Green Earth Volunteers, was successfullyheld from November 7-11 inKunming, China. Around 120 representatives from China, US, Australia and other countries attended the event. The theme of this year’s Forum is Human Strategies for Conserving Nature’s Biodiversity. Issues addressed inlcude1) Watershed restoration and international river management; 2) Innovative methods and techniques in conservation; 3) Current biodiversity conservation problems, and 4) International experience and influence. Prior to the presentations and panels, capacity building workshops were held covering advocacy project development, grassroots organizing, fundraising and NGO starting up. Experts from China, US and Germany provided the training. Student representatives from 23 college green groups also held their 2ndsub-Forum.Student participants issued a statement to all college students in China to call for more active participation in conservation. The Forum attendees believed that for more effective conservation and meeting environmental challenges, it is very important for more NGO participation and involvement. The Bi-Annual NGO Forum on International Environmental Cooperation in China, launched by IFCE in 1999, has become a key platform for Chinese NGOs to communicate with international communities. 3. IFCE, jointed by the Chinese Land Survey and Design Institute, organized a trainingworkshop in Chengdu on landuse planning and environmental assessment from Nov. 9-10. The participants included 200 plus senior professionals and leaders in landuse planning from more than 30 provinces and major cities. During the two-day workshop, IFCE-invited experts, Dr. Gary Evans and Mr. Mark Spencer, gave lectures on US land management history and status, landuse planning procedures, environmental assessment methods and techniques, etc. Dr. Rong Wei, IFCE’s sr. technical advisor, also attended the workshop. 4. IFCE hosted a delegation from Jiangsu Association for Science and Tech. On Nov. 16. The delegation consists of Mr. Zhang Tieheng, the vice president of the association and four other leaders from Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou and Nantong. Dr. Ping He introduced IFCE and discussed with the delegation on possible cooperation. Dr. He also recommended Jiangsu develop a long term cooperative relation with UCAPO, an umbrella organization for all Chinese professional organizations in WashingtonDC region. Dr. Hepresently serves as the president of UCAPO as well. 5. IFCE’s Wuhan representative, Ms. Fan Liangzhen, attended an environmental conference in Jiuzaigou, Sichuan. The conference was organized by the Chinese Environmental Union, a coalition of sr. leaders and professionals in environmental fields. Mr. Xie Zhenghua, the administrator of SEPA, participated the conference. 6. Dr. Ping He singed an agreement in Beijing with Ms. Zheng Yuzhen, general manger of Shenzhen Fenghe Env. Engineering Company to establish IFCE Shenzhen office. The office will help coordinate IFCE’s activities in southern China. Shenzhen Fenghe Env. Engineering Company is a reputed firm in environmental engineering business in the region for more than ten years. It will provide support for environmental tech transfer, one of key IFCE objectives.
