November 11 Climate Change Affects Northeastern Grain Production (China Climate Network)

With the rate of climate variability increases, the outputs of soybean, corn and spring wheat declines significantly, which also affects the stability of the harvest.  The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that by 2100, the range of temperature increase in northeastern China will be higher than global average level by 2100.  Recently, Jin Zhiqing, the researcher from the Agricultural Resources and Environmental Institute of Jiangsu Agriculture Science Faculty, led the project team to research and conduct a quantitative survey on climate change and its impacts on grain production.  He also proposed the solutions at the same time.

November 11 China's Efforts in Controlling Greenhouse Gas Emissions   (Sichuan News Network)

The National Energy Bureau announced that, China is considering adjusting the "Long-term Nuclear Power Development Plan," so that the original scheduled 40 million kilowatts installed capacity of nuclear power could be enhance to 70 million kilowatts or more.  Huang Li, the deputy director of Energy Saving and Technology Equipment Department in the National Energy Bureau said that the snow disaster at the beginning of this year reflected the risks of long-distance power transmission and delivery of coal.  Meanwhile, G8 summit stressed again that all the nations must reduced CO2 emission to fight the global warmingThese reasons prompted Chinese government to adjust the national energy strategy.

November 11 China and Iraq Sign Oil Deal (New York Times)

BAGHDAD ― An Iraqi state-owned oil company, North Oil, has signed a contract with a Chinese state-owned oil corporation, CNPC, that was first negotiated during Saddam Hussein's regime, an official in Iraq's oil ministry said on Tuesday.  The deal is worth $3.5 billion, according to the official, deputy oil minister Ahmed al-Shamaa, and it is the first major oil-development deal that Iraq has made with a foreign company since the American invasion in 2003.

November 12 The Fourth World City Forum on climate Change ( Xinhua News)
The attendants in the fourth World City Forum pointed out that, cities should take responsibility of dealing with climate change.  Cities, the most remarkable energy consumption organisms, gathering massive industrial production, heating facilities and vehicles, are closely related to climate change.  They also make water and air pollutions, release greenhouse gases while making products, supplying heats and transporting.  At the meantime, urbanization destroys cities' fauna and flora.  The attendants widely discussed the strategies on how human being can co-exist with nature, maintain the function of bio-community, manage municipal pollutions, and provide clean drinking water.

November 12 China Eastern Airline Begins Energy Conservation in Details (Xinhua News)

Until October, China Eastern Airline Corporation has totally consumed nearly 3 million tons of standard coal equivalent, approximately equals to 15 billion Yuan which accounts for 57.61% of operating cost.  Since this year, the company has emphasized the mission of energy saving and emission reduction, cut down 6.79% of energy consumption compared to last year.  As China Eastern Airline Corporation strictly practices the policy of "reducing operating cost and the consumption of fuel," "the regulation on management of APU," and "the statute on saving cost of flight operation" this year, the company has made efforts to optimize the flight route, to reduce hourly oil consumption and improve the quality of maintenance. At the same time, it actively controls the gasoline cost by reducing the weight of magazines and water on the flight.

November 13 Hebei Iron and Steel Corporation Ensures the Energy-saving InvestmentHebei Daily News

It is said by Tanggang Company of Hebei Steel and Iron Group that, as one of important energy-saving projects at provincial level this year, Gas Utilization in Northern Blast Furnace Area project, with a total investment of 70.5 million Yuan had been put into pilot-run process.  With the completion of construction, the utilization rate of blast furnace gas in Tanggang Company has reached 98%.  According to Wang Yifang, the chairman of Hebei Steel and Iron Group, 80 percent of the energy-saving and emission reduction project with the investment of 659 million Yuan this year has been completed.  The whole project will be completed by the end of this year.

November 13 Li Xiaolin Attended the Copenhagen Climate Council Roundtable (China Electricity News Network)
On the morning of Nov. 11, the business roundtable of Copenhagen Climate Council was held in Beijing.  Li Xiaolin, the chairwoman of China Power International, attended the meeting and was invited to give a speech.  Ms Li emphasized the importance of corporation responsibility, reporting mechanism and strengthening cooperation in her speech and pointed out that to combat with the climate change, Chinese government and enterprises should make comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development

November 14 US 'import alert' on China food

US authorities have issued a nationwide "import alert" for Chinese-made food products in the wake of the melamine contamination scandal.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had already issued an alert warning Americans not to consume Chinese products containing milk. Thousands of Chinese have been poisoned this year. The latest alert goes beyond dairy products to such items as drinks, sweets, and baby and pet food.
